The biggest trend in methodological proposals is the incorporation of bilingualism in the classroom, but you are probably still not sure if this change will affect your curricular program and, therefore, the performance of the educational community, how can you test before making a change? ? In our blog today, we introduce you to the CLIL methodology and how it can bring a sample of the bilingual experience to the classroom.

What is CLI?

Content and Language Integrated Learning (CLIL) is a "cognitively driven approach with a dual focus on language and content learning as students develop learning skills." (Díaz-Maggioli and Painter-Farrell, 2016, p. 357). English is the primary language of choice for bilingual instruction in most Latin American countries. CLIL is not a new way of teaching a language, nor is it a new way of teaching content, it is an innovative approach that combines both actions.

Therefore, the Integrated Learning of Contents and Foreign Languages (CLIL, in its acronyms in Spanish), implies taking subjects such as history or natural sciences in a language other than one's own, which is a great benefit both for the learning of other languages and for the subjects taught in those languages. CLIL's emphasis on problem solving motivates students to be able to solve problems even in a language other than their mother tongue.

Why try CLIL?

It allows implementing a transversal and more inclusive approach to teaching. In addition, it is a flexible methodology that allows the use of educational technology and other active methodologies such as gamification, the flipped classroom or project-based learning in the classroom.

You can use all kinds of digital materials or resources to do this. The use of these types of resources can significantly enrich the classroom experience. Therefore, the teacher who applies the methodology must be flexible and open to include everything that the new educational trends offer in the learning experience in their daily life.

In addition to this, CLIL centers the student in the learning process through:

• Social interaction with the teacher or between peers, following Vygotsky's concept of mediation (1978) and the Zone of Proximal Development (ZPD) to explain the margin of incidence of educational action. For Vygotsky, this zone is the difference between what students can do on their own and what they could do with the help of an adult or a more capable partner.

• Scaffolding (Wood, Bruner and Ross, 1976) which means the help or guidance of something or someone more expert, be it the teacher, other classmates or resources.

• Cognitive engagement. CLIL teachers have to design strategies for students to engage in their own learning. This means that students have to be aware of what they have learned by developing metacognitive skills such as «learning to learn».
